Parvovirus Infection

Parvovirus (পারভোভাইরাস )infection is caused by a virus known as parvovirus B19.

This infection is most common in children, but adults can also be affected if they did not get infected during childhood. The virus spreads easily from person to person, often through the air.

In children, parvovirus infection often causes a distinctive facial rash, sometimes called a “slapped cheek” rash. The rash appears red on lighter skin and purplish on darker skin tones, making it less noticeable in brown or Black skin. Adults who get parvovirus infection may experience joint pain or discomfort.

Most parvovirus infections are mild and resolve on their own. However, pregnant individuals, people with weakened immune systems, or those with certain blood disorders may require medical attention.

To reduce the risk of infection, practice good hygiene: wash hands frequently, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Symptoms:

Symptoms of parvovirus B19 infection usually appear 5 to 10 days after being exposed to the virus.

Many people may not show any symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they vary depending on age and whether there are underlying blood or immune system conditions.

In Children:
Early signs of infection can include:

  • Fever

  • Stomach upset

  • Headache

  • Runny nose

  • Diarrhea

  • Facial rash

As the infection progresses, children may develop a facial rash often called a “slapped cheek” rash. This is a hallmark of fifth disease. The rash appears red on light skin and purplish on darker skin, making it harder to notice.

Later, a second rash may appear on the arms, legs, chest, back, or buttocks. This rash is pink or purple, lacy, slightly raised, and can be itchy, particularly on the soles of the feet. It usually lasts 7 to 10 days but may come and go for up to three weeks. Factors like changes in temperature, sunlight, stress, or exercise can make the rash more noticeable.

In Adults:
Adults are more likely to experience joint pain, swelling, or stiffness. Women may experience these symptoms more often than men. Commonly affected joints include the hands, wrists, knees, ankles, and feet. These symptoms usually last 1 to 3 weeks.

When to See a Doctor:
Most mild cases do not require medical attention. However, see a healthcare professional if you or your child has:

  • A blood disorder, such as sickle cell anemia

  • A weakened immune system

  • Are pregnant

Causes:

Parvovirus infection is caused by parvovirus B19, which spreads from person to person through:

  • Sneezing or coughing

  • Saliva

  • Close contact and hand-to-hand contact

The virus can also spread through blood or blood products. Pregnant individuals can pass the infection to their unborn baby.

The virus is most contagious during the early stage when cold-like symptoms are present. Once rashes or joint pain appear, the risk of spreading the virus is low. Most people can safely return to work or school after the rash develops.

Other types of parvoviruses affect only animals, such as cats and dogs. Humans cannot get infected from pets, nor can pets catch parvovirus B19 from humans.
