Medication Overuse Headaches

Medication overuse headaches (মেডিকেশন ওভারইউস হেডেকস) occur when headache medicines are used too frequently over a long period. It is generally safe to use pain relievers occasionally for headaches, but taking them more than a few days each week can trigger medication overuse headaches, also known as rebound headaches.

This condition is more likely in people who already suffer from headache disorders, such as migraines. Those without a history of headaches rarely develop these types of headaches. However, individuals with a headache history who regularly take pain medications for other conditions, like arthritis, may also experience medication overuse headaches.

The good news is that these headaches usually improve after stopping the overused medications. While this can make short-term pain management challenging, healthcare providers can guide patients on strategies to prevent medication overuse headaches.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of medication overuse headaches depend on the type of headache being treated and the medicine used. Common signs include:

  • Headaches that occur every day or nearly every day, often waking people from sleep.

  • Headaches that improve temporarily with pain medicine but return as the medicine wears off.

Other possible symptoms:

  • Nausea

  • Restlessness

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Memory problems

  • Irritability

When to See a Doctor

Headaches are common, but some require urgent attention. Seek immediate medical care if your headache:

  • Comes on suddenly and is extremely severe.

  • Occurs with fever, stiff neck, rash, confusion, seizures, double vision, weakness, numbness, or trouble speaking.

  • Follows a head injury.

  • Gets worse despite rest and pain medicine.

  • Is a new and persistent type of headache, especially in people over 50.

  • Comes with shortness of breath.

  • Happens when standing but improves when lying down.

Consult a healthcare professional if:

  • You have two or more headaches per week.

  • You take pain relievers for headaches more than twice a week.

  • You need higher-than-recommended doses of over-the-counter pain medicine to relieve headaches.

  • Your headache pattern changes.

Causes:

The exact cause of medication overuse headaches is not fully understood, but frequent use of headache medicines can trigger them. Risk varies depending on the type of medicine:

  • Simple pain relievers: Acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen have a low risk if taken as directed. Exceeding recommended doses increases the risk.

  • Combined pain relievers: Medications combining caffeine, aspirin, and acetaminophen (like Excedrin) carry a moderate risk. Prescription medicines containing butalbital have a high risk and are generally not recommended for regular headache treatment.

  • Migraine medicines: Triptans and some other migraine treatments have a high risk, while newer migraine medicines called gepants appear to have little to no risk.

  • Opioids: Painkillers derived from opium or synthetic opioids carry a high risk. Taking them 10 or more days per month can cause medication overuse headaches.
