Kawasaki Disease

Kawasaki disease (কাওয়াসাকি ডিজিজ) is a condition that causes inflammation in the walls of small to medium-sized blood vessels throughout the body. It most commonly affects the arteries that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart in children.

This disease is sometimes called mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome because it can also cause swelling in lymph nodes and the mucous membranes in the mouth, nose, eyes, and throat.

Children with Kawasaki disease may experience a high fever, swollen hands and feet with peeling skin, and redness in the eyes and tongue. The good news is that Kawasaki disease is often treatable. With prompt medical care, most children recover fully without long-term complications.

Bangla Version:

Symptoms:

Children with Kawasaki disease often have a high fever lasting five or more days (above 102.2°F or 39°C). In addition, the child usually has at least four of the following signs:

  • A rash on the body or in the genital area.

  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck.

  • Very red eyes without thick discharge.

  • Red, dry, or cracked lips and a red, swollen tongue.

  • Swelling and redness of the palms and soles, with peeling of skin on fingers and toes later.

Symptoms may not all appear at the same time. Even if a symptom disappears, inform your child’s doctor.

Other possible signs include:

  • Stomach pain

  • Diarrhea

  • Irritability or fussiness

  • Joint pain

  • Vomiting

Some children may have a prolonged fever but fewer than four typical symptoms. This is called incomplete Kawasaki disease, which still requires treatment within 10 days to prevent heart artery damage.

Kawasaki disease can sometimes resemble multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, which may occur in children affected by COVID-19.

When to See a Doctor
If your child has a fever lasting more than three days, contact a healthcare professional promptly. Early treatment—within 10 days of symptom onset—can reduce the risk of long-term heart artery complications.

Causes:

The exact cause of Kawasaki disease is unknown. It is not considered contagious. Some researchers believe it may develop after a viral or bacterial infection or due to environmental factors. Certain genes may increase a child’s susceptibility.
