Hemochromatosis

Hemochromatosis (হিমোক্রোমাটোসিস) is a medical condition in which the body absorbs more iron than it needs from food. The excess iron gets stored in organs such as the liver, heart, and pancreas. High iron levels can lead to serious health issues, including liver damage, heart disease, and diabetes.

There are several forms of hemochromatosis, but the most common type is inherited through genes passed down in families. Not everyone who carries these genes will develop severe symptoms. Signs of the condition often appear in middle age.

Treatment generally involves regularly removing blood from the body. Since a large portion of the body’s iron is stored in red blood cells, this process helps reduce iron levels and prevent complications.

Symptoms:

Some people with hemochromatosis may never experience symptoms. Early signs often resemble those of other common health conditions.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Joint pain

  • Abdominal discomfort

  • Fatigue

  • Weakness

  • Diabetes

  • Reduced sex drive

  • Impotence

  • Heart problems

  • Liver damage

  • Bronze or grayish skin

  • Difficulty with memory or concentration

When symptoms usually appear

The most common type of hemochromatosis is present from birth, but most people don’t notice symptoms until later in life — typically after age 40 in men and after age 60 in women. Women are more likely to develop symptoms after menopause, as they no longer lose iron through menstruation or pregnancy.

When to see a doctor

Consult a healthcare professional if you notice any of these symptoms. If a close family member has hemochromatosis, discuss genetic testing with your doctor. Testing can determine whether you carry the gene that increases the risk of developing this condition.

Causes:

Hemochromatosis is most commonly caused by changes in a gene that controls how much iron the body absorbs from food. These genetic changes are inherited from parents and are the main reason for hereditary hemochromatosis.

Gene mutations

The HFE gene is the most common cause of hereditary hemochromatosis. Each parent contributes one HFE gene. The two main mutations in this gene are C282Y and H63D. Genetic testing can reveal whether these mutations are present.

  • Two altered genes: Individuals may develop hemochromatosis and can pass the altered gene to their children. Not everyone with two altered genes will experience severe symptoms.

  • One altered gene: Usually, carriers do not develop the disease, but they can pass the gene to their children. Disease occurs only if the child inherits another altered gene from the other parent.

How Hemochromatosis Affects the Body

Iron is essential for many body functions, including producing red blood cells. However, excess iron is toxic.

A liver hormone called hepcidin regulates iron absorption and storage. In hemochromatosis, hepcidin’s function is disrupted, leading to increased iron absorption. The excess iron accumulates in major organs, especially the liver, causing long-term damage. Over time, this can result in cirrhosis, diabetes, heart failure, or other organ complications.

Other Types of Hemochromatosis

  • Juvenile Hemochromatosis: Symptoms appear in teens or young adults (ages 15–30), caused by changes in the hemojuvelin or hepcidin genes.

  • Neonatal Hemochromatosis: Severe form affecting unborn babies, with rapid iron buildup in the liver, possibly due to autoimmune processes.

  • Secondary Hemochromatosis: Not inherited; often occurs in people needing repeated blood transfusions due to anemia or liver disease, leading to iron overload.
