Diagnosis:
Bronchiolitis is typically diagnosed by observing your child’s symptoms and listening to their lungs with a stethoscope. X-rays and other tests are generally not necessary unless the child’s symptoms worsen or there is concern about other potential problems.
Possible tests include:
-
Chest X-ray: To check for signs of pneumonia.
-
Viral testing: A mucus sample from the child’s nose can help identify the virus causing the infection. This is done using a swab inserted gently into the nose.
-
Blood tests: Occasionally, blood tests may be used to check the white blood cell count. An elevated white blood cell count often indicates an infection. Blood tests may also check for low oxygen levels in the bloodstream.
The healthcare provider may also check for dehydration, especially if the child has been refusing food or liquids or has been vomiting. Signs of dehydration include dry mouth, skin, extreme tiredness, and little or no urination.
Treatment:
Bronchiolitis typically lasts 1 to 2 weeks, though symptoms can occasionally persist longer. Most children can be treated at home with comfort measures. It’s important to watch for signs of worsening breathing problems, such as struggling for each breath or being unable to speak or cry due to difficulty breathing.
Since bronchiolitis is caused by a virus, antibiotics (which are used for bacterial infections) are not effective. However, if a bacterial infection such as pneumonia or an ear infection occurs alongside bronchiolitis, an antibiotic may be prescribed.
Bronchodilators, which open the airways, do not seem to help with bronchiolitis and are typically not recommended. In severe cases, a nebulized albuterol treatment may be tried to see if it helps. During this treatment, a machine creates a fine mist that the child breathes in.
Oral corticosteroids and chest physiotherapy (pounding on the chest to loosen mucus) are not effective and are not recommended.
Hospital Care:
In rare cases, a child may need to stay in the hospital. They may receive oxygen through a face mask to help with oxygen levels in the blood and fluids through an IV to prevent dehydration. In severe cases, a tube may be inserted into the windpipe to assist with breathing.
Lifestyle and Home Remedies:
While you may not be able to shorten the duration of your child’s illness, you can take steps to keep them comfortable:
-
Humidify the air: A cool-mist humidifier or vaporizer can help moisten the air, making it easier for your child to breathe and loosen mucus. Clean the humidifier regularly to avoid bacteria or mold growth.
-
Keep your child hydrated: Infants should be given formula or breast milk. For older children, offer fluids such as water, juice, or milk. Smaller amounts of liquid offered frequently may help if your child has trouble drinking due to nasal congestion.
-
Saline nose drops: These over-the-counter drops can ease nasal congestion. Place a few drops into the nostril and suction the mucus out with a bulb syringe.
-
Over-the-counter pain relievers: For fever or discomfort, consult with your healthcare provider about using medicines like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil). Avoid giving aspirin to children due to the risk of Reye’s syndrome.
-
Avoid secondhand smoke: Smoking can worsen respiratory symptoms. Ask smokers in your household to smoke outside.
-
Avoid certain over-the-counter medicines: Don’t give children under 6 years old over-the-counter cough and cold medications unless recommended by a healthcare provider.
