Symptoms
Antiphospholipid syndrome may cause the following signs and symptoms:
- Blood clots in the legs (DVT): Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can cause pain, swelling, and redness in the legs. These clots may travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism.
- Repeated miscarriages or stillbirths: Pregnancy complications may include high blood pressure (preeclampsia) and premature delivery.
- Stroke: This may occur in young individuals with no known risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
- Transient ischemic attack (TIA): Similar to a stroke, a TIA is temporary and typically doesn’t cause permanent damage.
- Rash: Some people may develop a red rash with a lacy, net-like pattern.
Less common symptoms include:
- Neurological issues: Blood clots blocking blood flow to the brain may cause chronic headaches, migraines, dementia, or seizures.
- Heart problems: The condition can damage heart valves, leading to cardiovascular disease.
- Low blood platelet counts (thrombocytopenia): A low platelet count can cause bleeding from the nose and gums or bleeding under the skin, which appears as red spots.
When to See a Doctor
Consult a healthcare provider if you experience:
- Unexplained nose or gum bleeding
- Heavy menstrual periods
- Vomit that is bright red or resembles coffee grounds
- Black, tarry stools or bright red stools
- Unexplained abdominal pain
Seek emergency care if you have signs of:
- Stroke: Sudden numbness, weakness, or paralysis in the face, arm, or leg, difficulty speaking or understanding, vision problems, or a severe headache.
- Pulmonary embolism: Sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, and coughing up blood-streaked mucus.
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): Swelling, redness, or pain in a leg or arm.
Causes
Antiphospholipid syndrome occurs when the immune system mistakenly produces antibodies that increase blood clotting. Normally, antibodies help protect the body from viruses and bacteria.
This condition may develop due to an underlying autoimmune disorder. In some cases, it occurs without an identifiable cause.

Diagnosis
If you’ve experienced unexplained blood clots or pregnancy loss, your healthcare provider may order blood tests to check for clotting issues and antibodies linked to antiphospholipid syndrome.
To confirm the diagnosis, antibodies must be detected in your blood at least twice, with tests conducted 12 or more weeks apart.
Some individuals may have antiphospholipid antibodies without developing symptoms. A diagnosis is confirmed only when these antibodies lead to health complications.
Treatment
Blood Clot Treatment:
- Initial treatment typically involves blood-thinning medications like heparin and warfarin (Jantoven).
- Heparin is fast-acting and administered via injections, while warfarin is taken orally and takes a few days to work. Aspirin is also used to thin the blood.
- Blood-thinning medications increase the risk of bleeding, so your doctor will monitor your dosage with regular blood tests to ensure your blood clots enough to prevent excessive bleeding.
Other Medications:
- Some studies suggest that hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), rituximab (Rituxan), and statins may help manage antiphospholipid syndrome. More research is needed to confirm their effectiveness.
Pregnancy Treatment:
- With proper treatment, successful pregnancies are possible. Treatment often includes heparin or a combination of heparin and aspirin.
- Warfarin is not used during pregnancy because it can harm the fetus.
Self-Care
If you’re taking blood thinners, take extra precautions to prevent injury and avoid excessive bleeding:
- Avoid contact sports and activities that may cause bruising or injury.
- Use a soft toothbrush and waxed floss.
- Shave with an electric razor.
- Be cautious when using sharp tools like knives and scissors.
- Women should avoid estrogen-based contraception and menopause treatments.
Diet and Supplements:
- Certain foods and medications can affect blood thinners.
- Vitamin K can reduce the effectiveness of warfarin, but not other blood thinners. Limit foods high in vitamin K, such as avocado, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, leafy greens, and garbanzo beans.
- Alcohol can increase warfarin’s blood-thinning effect, so consult your doctor about alcohol consumption.
- Avoid medications, vitamins, and herbal products that can interact with warfarin, including some pain relievers, cold medicines, stomach remedies, garlic, ginkgo, and green tea.

(Treatment)
(Self-Care)
